Magnolia Christian School Blog by Onetime Troubled Teen Named Grace Smith

There are many amazing things that I have learned about myself at MCS and many things that I continue to learn from my time here. I think the very best thing about here is that I have been placed into a safe environment. It gives me time to think and see that I am worth so much more than the things that I was doing at home. I have really seen that all the things that I use to get really upset about really weren’t worth the time for me to get hurt.

I’m very thankful for this place because I know if I wasn’t given my second chance at life I would be dead right now. Spending everyday here I have also taken many things like just simply being able to appreciate rules and structure. I believe it is very important to be able to not just follow rules but also understand why they are here. I see now many things this place has to offer and I know that this place really is a life changing experience.

My main turning point would have to be going through discovery. Up until discovery I was basically refusing but being compliant at the same time. I was so set in staying in my crap that nothing mattered to me. When I went through discovery I opened my mind and my heart to everything that it had to offer. I am so glad that I got to experience it. I learned how to deal with my feelings and how to share them. It really is a life changing experience. Day to day here I take so much in from my peers feedback to my own feedback and I get stronger every day.

All in all this place has helped me see so much and I would be nowhere without it.

Dear Faculty & Staff at Magnolia Christian School God bless everyone at MCS for the work you are doing saving families!

December 7, 2009

Dear Faculty & Staff at Magnolia Christian School:

I just wanted to take a moment and express my sincere gratitude for everything you have done for my family.  When we sent our daughter Katie to your school in August 2008, we were at the end and had no where else to turn.  We had tried everything up to that point to save our daughter and yet she continued to speed down the path of self destruction.

It had reached the point that the entire family unit was self destructing and something had to be done.  Fortunately for us we were referred to your program.  Little did we know at that time that the process would not only work on saving our daughters life but would also be instrumental in providing us the tools and training we needed to restore health to our entire family unit.

Now it is December 2009 and what a difference a year makes!  Katie has been home with us for three months now and is doing very well.  She is making straight A’s in her classes and is on track to graduate from high school a year ahead of schedule.  Even more important than the academic aspect is the overall change in Katie and our family.  We’ve not had any instance of the major problems of the past since she’s been home.

Things haven’t been perfect (she is still a teenager) but the problems we encounter are so minor compared to the major self destructive issues that we had prior to her attending MCS.   When something minor does occur, Katie’s ability to hold herself accountable is a very refreshing change from life in the past.  Another aspect that has changed is Katie’s ability to recognize those friends that will build her up and those that will tear her down.

Besides recognizing and not interacting with bad friends from the past, Katie has kept her new friends accountable for their actions and has had to remove some friends from her circle for actions they have done.  While this was difficult for her she recognized this on her own and took the appropriate action without us having to say anything.  What a huge turnaround for all of us compared to life as we knew it prior to MCS!

So again thank you very much to the entire staff at MCS for everything you did to help our daughter and our family!  I still sometimes cannot believe the difference a year can make.  To come from the pit of despair, and what was the lowest point in all our lives, to now a little over a year later having our daughter and family back is just an amazing turnaround!

If we can be of any assistance to other families considering MCS, please let me know.  I would be glad to speak with them about our experience and what MCS has been able to provide us.  Having been there before, I think it is extremely important to have someone who has gone through this when trying to make that decision.  I thank God that I had someone to speak with who had direct experience with MCS prior to sending Katie. It let me know that we were not alone and that someone was out there that could help.

God bless everyone at MCS for the work you are doing saving families!
Sincerely,
Rick Torrance
